When navigating in a storm, the clear, calm voice of a leader in command is essential to communicate direction, build trust, and gain support for difficult decisions.
As a Coast Guard captain, it is my duty to communicate safety concerns and radio a “Pan Pan” message if we need help or encounter a hazard that endangers others.
Things rarely get better until a leader speaks up.
Be direct. Report your location. State the current situation. Ask for help if needed.
