When The Mayflower departed England in 1620 on its voyage to America, the captain charted a course for Virginia. After two months at sea, storms, current, and uncorrected steering errors drove The Mayflower well north to Cape Cod where the Pilgrims were forced instead by winter to settle a new Colony they called New England.
